Lafayette Louisiana Restaurants That Serve Up All The Great Food

Louisiana makes me think of all kinds of things. From creole and cajun food to the Big Easy, casinos and of course all its great cities, Louisiana is a gem of a state. One of the great cities of Louisiana is Lafayette, and I have certainly driven through that city before. I couldn’t tell you much as far as the scene because I just remember Louisiana in general and stopping in Monroe. However, I have hand selected three restaurants to help you have great places to eat on your itinerary when you stop in or pass through Lafayette.

The first Lafayette restaurant is called The French Press. It is located on East Vermilion Street. Biscuits and breakfast sandwiches have made the menu highlights, and it is said to be a good place in Lafayette for brunch. Now after your brunch stop, let’s see what place we are making a stop at next.

It is Louisiana Crawfish Time, and it is located on Verot School Road. That is the cajun and creole food mentioned earlier, so you get the whole experience at this place. One reviewer called herself a Bayou girl and said she loved them, and you know she knows her stuff. That is making me hungry. Have you ever tried crawfish? I haven’t, but I have tasted creole food. It is going to be a treat for you.

Okay, there is time for one more restaurant, and it is going to be Pizza Artista on Johnson Street. You are talking about not just pizza but cajun sausage, crab and more. More great stuff is mentioned in the reviews, and honestly, it would make me pick this place to visit first. You will have to take a closer look and decide which stop gets your attention first, and then you can feast on a delicious meal.

Lafayette International Center Receives Presidential Award for Export Service

WASHINGTON D.C. (KLFY) – U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross presented the Lafayette International Center with the President’s “E” Star Award for Export Service at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. Accepting the award for the International Center and for Lafayette Consolidated Government were Dave Domingue, the Center’s Operations Coordinator, and Lafayette Mayor-President Joel Robideaux,.

The award highlights continued export promotion efforts during the past four years.

The center was one of only five presented with the President’s “E” Star Award, one of only two for export service, the only honoree from Louisiana, and the only local government entity in the entire country to be selected out of the 32 U.S. companies and organizations from across the country

“With today’s financial uncertainty, exporting helps to diversify our economy in the best way possible,” said Robideaux. “I am especially proud of the unique partnership between LCG and the International Center, and that the federal government recognizes this partnership as a model for all communities.”

U.S. exports totaled $2.21 trillion in 2016, accounting for nearly 12 percent of U.S. gross domestic product. Exports supported an estimated 11.5 million jobs nationwide in 2015, according to the most recent statistics from the International Trade Administration.

Changes possible to Lafayette Parish schools’ cellphone policy

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) Lafayette Parish School Board members are working to clarify and possibly make changes to the district’s cellphone policy.

Students are not allowed to have phones or other electronic devices audible or visible during school hours.

Currently, administrators confiscate any phones that are caught on campus for a period of five or more days.

One proposal is to have parents pick up the phones the same day they are confiscated. The student would then face discipline consequences. The first offense would result in detention, a second offense would result in an in-school suspension and the third offense would result in an out-of-school suspension.

“We’re trying to still have a consequence, but not have to inventory hundreds of phones throughout the school year,” said Chief Administrative Officer Joe Craig. “We would still have a consequence, but just reduce the confiscation aspect.”

A student could be recommended for expulsion if he or she refuses to turn over a phone or other device. Some board members questioned other aspects of the policy, namely penalizing students if a phone is visible. Schools require clear or mesh backpacks, meaning phones may be visible even if they are not in use.

Board President Dawn Morris said she was also worried about the policy’s wording, including what constitutes school hours. Morris said that could be interpreted as the last bell ringing for the day, the last student leaving or another time.

“I think there are several ambiguities,” Morris said. “I’d like to ask staff to clean up those issues.”

Superintendent Donald Aguillard said his staff will clarify the language and present the policy to the board for more discussion and a possible vote next week.

La. Seafood Cookoff leaving NOLA for Lafayette

NEW ORLEANS — The Louisiana Seafood Cook-Off has been moved from New Orleans to Lafayette to help stimulate Acadiana’s economy during the oil field slump.

Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser decided to move the 10th annual cooking competition incook-off in part because he used to own an oil field business in Acadiana.

"I’ve been through the ups and downs," Nungesser said. "An event like this — bringing a little more attention to Lafayette — could make the difference between a restaurant staying open through hard times in the oil industry and not staying open."

Nungesser discussed the cook-off’s move after a press conference held Friday to reveal the 12 chefs from across the state who will compete at the June 20 event at the Cajundome Convention Center.

Chefs selected to compete in this year’s event include:

Ryan Andre of City Pork Brasserie and Bar in Baton Rouge Bonnie Breaux of The St. John Restaurant in St. Martinville Lyle Broussard of Jack Daniel’s Bar & Grill in Lake Charles Eric Cook of Bourbon House in New Orleans Anthony Felan of Wine Country Bistro in Shreveport Ben Fidelak of The Levee in Alexandria Austin Kirzner of Red Fish Grill in New Orleans Dustie Latiolais of Crawfish Town USA in Henderson Chris McKnight of The Fat Pelican in Monroe Ernest Prejean of Prejean’s Restaurant in Lafayette Nathan Richard of Cavan in New Orleans Brad Tanner of Cafe Vermilionville in Lafayette

The Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board will again host the cook-off, but instead of partnering with the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience, the cook-off will be held in conjunction with the Taste of Eat Lafayette event.

"New Orleans wasn’t happy about it," Nungesser said with a chuckle during the press conference. "But they’ll get over it."

This will be the first time in 13 years that people can purchase tickets to the Taste of Eat Lafayette. Tickets were only available through giveaways from restaurants and sponsors before.

About 1,000 tickets will still be available through giveaways, and another 1,500 tickets will be available for purchase.

A $20 ticket allows you to sample cuisine from 60 locally owned restaurants while watching chefs compete in the Louisiana Seafood Cook-Off. The winning chef will be crowned king or queen during the event and spend a year representing Louisiana seafood at national and international events.

"It’s super exciting to be able to partner with Eat Lafayette," said Ben Mitchell, assistant director of the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board. "It’s just a win-win that also allows chefs to come in from other parts of the state instead of just New Orleans and the surrounding areas."

The cook-off could help fill hotel rooms and boost restaurant and retail sales in Acadiana during the event.

But more importantly, the joint event could encourage locals and visitors to make more trips to Lafayette’s locally owned restaurants, according to Ben Berthelot, president and CEO of Lafayette Travel.

"I don’t think it’s really about Lafayette versus New Orleans," Berthelot said. "But I’ll say that we’re very proud of our food here in Lafayette Parish."
